English Teacher’s Role in Forming the Students’ Discipline Character in Kurikulum Merdeka at SMP Negeri 3 Bawolato
Abstract
Discipline character is the behaviors of humans demonstrated through attitudes and actions in daily life, and the discipline character of students is the behaviors possessed by students, shown through attitudes that comply with school rules and a sense of responsibility. However, in reality, students at SMP Negeri 3 Bawolato exhibit a significant gap in discipline, as they often fail to adhere to school rules and neglect their responsibilities. The problems faced by the students include arriving late to class, not completing assignments from the teacher, and violating rules or agreements in the classroom. Based on this problem, this research aims to explore the factors causing student indiscipline and describe the role played by an English teacher in addressing student indiscipline. The method used in the research is a qualitative method with qualitative descriptive techniques consisting of observation and interviews. The research was conducted in the seventh grade and with the English teacher at SMP Negeri 3 Bawolato. The results of this research revealed four primary factors influencing student indiscipline: lack of parental supervision, environmental and peer influence, low motivation and interest in learning, and weak study habits. In response, English teachers carried out three main roles: acting as role models, managing classrooms and enforcing rules, and serving as motivators and facilitators of learning. Through this research, it is emphasized that the role of a teacher is crucial in forming students' character, especially in classroom discipline, through various methods, one of which is teaching methods.
